Leslie’s work has influenced public opinion, shifted narratives, moved policy, and strengthened brands. Along the way, she has created two successful social impact businesses, led winning cross-functional teams and campaigns, advised nonprofit, philanthropic and other purpose-driven leaders, and learned a thing or two about how change happens.
Career Highlights:
– Founded 1235 Strategies, a social change consultancy that helps organizations achieve impact through communications, advocacy, narrative, and creative marketing. Current and past clients include Public Welfare Foundation, Vera Institute of Justice, FrameWorks Institute, EITC Funders Network, Bail Project, FSG Consulting, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
– Built a 25-person Communications & Advocacy division at M+R, a leading digital marketing and PR firm for the biggest causes of the day. Increased staff size by 6x and gross revenue by over 650%. Clients included the Rockefeller Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, Humanity United, American Lung Association, Pew Charitable Trusts, Smart Growth America, American Jewish World Service, and the World Wildlife Fund.
– Co-led an $8+ mil policy and narrative campaign funded by the MacArthur Foundation to improve outcomes for young people in the justice system. In five years, passed policy changes in 37 states and secured a bil+ media impressions with measurable adoption of our messaging.
– Served as lead strategist for the Vera Institute’s $3.2 mil advocacy campaign repealing a 26-year ban on Pell grants for people in prison. Expanded access to education for more than 450k incarcerated students.
– Innovated a $1.65 mil narrative pilot with the FrameWorks Institute and Daigneault Digital, using framing strategies, RCT message testing, and digital media to influence local crime and safety narratives. Created a new Safety and Justice Playbook for funders and on-the-ground organizations.
– Led a social influencer campaign pilot for the EITC Funders Network (including Rockefeller and Annie E. Casey Foundations) to raise awareness of a temporary tax credit for young, lower-income workers. In 5 weeks, w/o existing infrastructure, reached 4 mil+ people and generated $625,000+ in tax refunds.
– Served for four years on the advisory council to the MacArthur Foundation’s Safety and Justice Challenge, providing counsel on communications, narrative, and partnership grantmaking.
